I attended a talk this evening given by the music Journalist Jimmy Martin on the present exhibition ‘My Mistake’ by Oscar Tuazon at the ICA. Jimmy’s talk was interesting and his ideas were well thought out. Although he was an engaging speaker, his delivery was a little bit shy and suggested that he wasn’t used to public speaking. The topic was the influence Black metal had had on the artist’s work. Jimmy played exerts of music including Slayer, Venom and Meyhem to demonstrate various idea and, quoted from an email interview with the artist and his main focus was on the fun in exploration of music and art.

Having been brought up in the tradition of old-school English art, I find it fairly difficult to understand why any artist would be motivated to create a work such as ‘My Mistake.’ I look at it and I go ‘well I could do that, so what makes it special?’ That idea that art requires skill and talent and result in spiritual enlightenment is very ingrained in me.

Jimmy’s talk made me think about the idea of choice as an artist. Yes, I expect I could design and build something like that, but I choose not to. Oscar Tuazon chooses to make this thing and to present it to the world as art. Why is it art to Oscar and a climbing frame to me? Why does Oscar choose to create pieces that are so easy to dismiss?

Today was deeply surreal.

We got to the email a few days ago to say that Bruce Dickinson had invited us on his radio show and to be honest I never really thought it was going to happen. When the lead singer of the most successful and influential Heavy Metal band on the planet invites you on his show you tend to think, 'I'm dreaming' or 'I'm drunk' or 'He’s got the wrong people.' Travel forward a few days. Marc, Tim and I are sitting in Bruce's studio and he's telling us a funny story about monks swinging on a giant ball of incense. Apparently I’m not dreaming or drunk and we’re the right people, because he’s asking us about our album and he’s got the title right and everything. It will be aired the 14th of May on BBC 6 and I have to say it was a bloody lovely day. Bruce has an infectious energy and a childlike enthusiasm for music and is a totally lovely bloke. What an honour, what a day and what a top man!

The Sea

It's been a long but very exciting week. Today I'm going to treat myself to an afternoon of watching movies with Miggins and stuffing my face.

Most of the week has been dedicated to the filming of the new Mediaeval Baebes EPK (Electronic Press Kit) This EPK is hopefully going to help us sell our new all-singing, all-dancing show to the larger theaters throughout the world. There are amazing costumes, fantastic sets, two hot semi-naked male dancers and of course plenty of amazing music, singing and playing of instruments. I can't wait for you to see it as I think it's really going to blow your minds.

I've also managed to squeeze in some composition work. Writing for the new PYTHIA album. We're on a fairly tight deadline to get the new album out at the beginning of next year. It sounds like that is ages away but believe me in music terms, it's just around the corner. Exciting news on the live front is that PYTHIA are starting to get some good shows, a main support with Arch Enemy in October being the one of the best opportunities we're have so far.

I think I'm going to try and take a trip to the seaside next weekend, weather permitting. I have a longing to see the sea at the moment. I hope one day I can live by the coast.

Remembering

Last night I got really drunk with my friend Jonas (Murder Mile) and played records all night in order to remind myself why I love music. After a round of disappointing and annoying business problems that surround my various music projects, I was starting to forget why I do it in the first place.

Money, Money, Money is always the problem. We just don't have enough of it and we're constantly struggling to keep everything afloat. Yawn, but although I have a terrible hangover today and no skin left on my ankles I have remembered my deep love and commitment to making music and I am feeling rejuvenated.
